In 1988, Buenaventura received the highest distinction given by the Philippine government to Filipino artists, the National Artist Award for Music, in recognition of his efforts in the development and promotion of national culture. His name was included in the 1974 edition of Who’s Who in the World and the 1975 edition of the Dictionary of International Biographies.
He also received numerous accolades from various educational institutions and civic organizations, acknowledging his talent and contributions to the country. Among these are:
