Hello and Welcome to Learning is Easy @ Your Library.
Mabuhay! Welcome to this video wherein we’re going to talk about how you can access and download our E-books. This video tutorial is brought to you by the Information Services and Instruction Section of the UP Diliman University Library.
If you’re all set, let’s start!
complete list of ebooks
It is important to be familiar with the E-book databases which are currently part of our collection. To see the complete list, visit our Main Library website at mainlib.upd.edu.ph
Once you’re in the website landing page, click the Search drop down then select ‘E-books‘. As you can see here, we have now identified the E-book databases that you can use throughout your stay at the university.
In order to know the scope, content, or coverage of a certain E-book, just click on the ‘title’ and it will redirect you to its information page. Some of the subscriptions have accompanying promotional materials or media to provide a brief overview of the resource. From here, you’ll be able to identify the e-book’s access points.
Ways to access ebooks subscriptions
Accessing your E-book subscriptions is fairly easy.
- Your first option is to use computer terminals, devices or wi-fi connection that are being managed by the university while on campus.
- Secondly, if you’re outside the premises of the campus, you can still access our online resources through our remote access protocol — OpenAthens.
ACCESSING EBOOKS SUBSCRIPTIONS VIA OPENATHENS
Let me provide you a quick demonstration on how to use our E-book subscriptions through OpenAthens.
- First off, you’ll need to log in to your UP mail account. Scroll down and click ‘OpenAthens’. As mentioned earlier, this will enable you to access our E-books as well as other online resources outside of the Diliman campus.
- Once you’ve reached the landing page, click login to MyAthens. After which, you’ll be immediately redirected to the resource list containing all of the available online subscriptions.
- Once you’ve identified the online database that you want to use, just simply click the title.
accessing ebooks in proquest database
For this demonstration, let’s go to ProQuest databases.
As you can see in the landing page, you can perform a basic search, advanced search, conduct a specific publication search, and browse other topics or feature content.
First, if you only want to search for E-books in this platform, click the ‘books’ button on the landing page before performing any kind of search. As you can see, I used the keyword ‘Philippines’ to conduct a basic search.
Before we select any given title, let’s discuss the filters and facets found on the left hand side of our screens. As the name suggests, these are used to narrow down our search by elements such as publication date, subject, document type, language, publication title, and so on and so forth.
At the top right corner of the search list, there are several functions that we can use to aid in our research:
- The first function will let you cite a material using a variety of citation formats. Click the drop down and select the citation format you want to use.
- The second function enables you to send a single or multiple titles to your colleague’s email.
As you can see on your screens, you can type the email address to whom you wish to send the details of this particular title. You can also add a subject or message. It is suggested that you tick or check the ‘Bibliography’ so that the bibliographic citation will be included in the email.
If we want to view the contents of the E-book through a browser, click on the ‘title’ first to be redirected to its personal landing page. You’ll see the information relevant to the materials such as the availability, book details, brief description or abstract, and table of contents. You have the option to download the entire book or just one chapter.
steps on how to download ebooks
First, let’s discuss how to download a chapter.
You will see an alert that says: ‘pages remaining for PDF print or chapter download.’ For every chapter that you download, the total number of pages will change depending on the number of pages of the book chapter you downloaded.
Once you’ve identified the chapter that you want to download, just click ‘Download PDF‘ beside the chapter in the table of contents section. This option is useful if the information you need is found in certain chapters and not the entire book. If you have consumed the number of pages allowed for download and you need to download more, you may try again after 24 hours.
If you’re reading the book online, you can see several functions at the top right corner of the page such as print, download, bookmark, add notes, and site for your convenience.
If you wish to download the E-book on your device, click the ‘Download book‘
Please do take note that some of our online E-book subscriptions require us to use Adobe Digital Editions as part of the publisher’s digital rights management policy. If you don’t have it installed in your device. You can simply click on the link that will redirect you to the Adobe Digital Editions page.
Once you’ve successfully downloaded Adobe Digital Editions, you can now select the ‘loan length‘ of the E-book. After selecting the loan length, you can now download the ebook file. You simply need to open your Adobe Digital Editions. Go to file then click ‘add to library‘ and select the E-book file.
If you’ll notice in our example, the E-book will be available for 21 days and after that, you won’t be able to view or access the E-book. If you’re still not finished with the resource, you may simply repeat the E-book download process.
