Hello and Welcome to Learning is Easy @ Your Library.
Mabuhay! This video will tell you how to use EBSCO Discovery Service.
This video is brought to you by your friendly Reference Librarians at the Information Services and Instruction Section, UP Diliman University Library.
EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS)
In line with its mission to provide the best possible access to information, the University Library uses EBSCO Discovery Service or simply EDS to search all electronic resources in one platform.
Discovery service is an online tool that enables libraries to search seamlessly across a wide range of content. Discovery services use federated search to retrieve information from many different resources with just one query.
You might be wondering, ”why do I need EDS when there are many other databases?”
EDS is generally recommended for preliminary searching and when you still don’t have a specific database to search with for your research.
Benefits of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS)
Besides, EDS offers the following benefits:
- Convenience – Searches multiple resources from one interface.
- Security – One time login and single credential per session ensures that client’s credentials are not exposed and limits vulnerability.
- Flexibility – provide clients means to refine search parameters with as much simplicity or complexity as their research requires.
- Reach – searches all available resources
How to access the EDS?
There are several ways to access the eds, just follow these simple steps:
Visit the University Library’s homepage at mainlib.upd.edu.ph, scroll down and look for the Saliktroniko search function
Under databases tab, type in the keyword of the topic you want to research, and click the magnifying glass to run your search or simply hit enter.
You will be redirected to the search results page which you may evaluate and refine further.
Note: if you are accessing outside of the University Campus, you may need to login to our remote access tool by clicking the banner that appears at the top of the page
Research Starter
If a Research Starter is available for your search term, it will appear at the top of the search results list. Designed to enhance the research experience, Research Starters include links to relevant articles and images. The content is curated from a variety of high-quality sources including Salem Press, Encyclopedia Britannica, and others.
How to refine search results?
Got too many results?
You may refine your search by clicking the limiters at the top portion of the screen. You may select online full text, peer reviewed, and/or at my library.
Click the all filters button and you’ll see the other limiter options. You may limit your search further by publication date, subject, publication, publisher, language, geography, collection, source type, and content provider.
The number of applied filters is updated on the All filters button.
If you would want to add search terms and/or criteria, select advanced search
How to navigate search results?
The list of search results provides basic information, access options and additional tools. These include:
- Online full text view – shows the content in a web format page with navigation links
- PDF Full Text – previews and/or downloads a PDF of the entire resource
- Full Text Finder – provides links where the resource can be accessed
- Request this item through interlibrary loan – redirects you to an interlibrary loan request form. When accomplished, the form will be sent to your reference librarians to search for the material’s availability.
On your result list, select a material to read by clicking the Access now button and selecting a Full text option from the menu. If only one full text option is available, the Access now button will display that. To view more information about an article, click the View details link.
The Detailed Record includes an article’s citation information and links to full text, when available. Use the tools at the top of the record to add the article to your saved items, copy a citation of the article in one of several formats, add the article to a Project in your Dashboard, share a link to the article via email, or download the full text or a csv file containing the article’s citation information.
