Akda at Hayag: A Talk on Impactful Publishing

AKDA AT HAYAG is a hybrid talk series consisting of webinars and seminars prepared by the University Library for the faculty of the University of the Philippines, as well as faculty of state universities and colleges (SUCs), local colleges and universities (LUCs), and public and private higher education institutions (HEIs). In partnership with leading academic research databases such as IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, SAGE Publishing, Emerald Publishing, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, and Springer, this series equips faculty with the knowledge and resources needed for research publishing in their respective disciplines. This initiative will run from May 2024 to November 2024.

Objectives

Primary Objective: To empower the faculty of the University of the Philippines as well as faculty of state universities and colleges (SUCs), local colleges and universities (LUCs), and public and private higher education institutions (HEIs) with publishing knowledge necessary to connect research efforts with achieving impact

Specific Objectives:

  1. To enlighten faculty regarding the research publishing procedures and requirements of different publishers
  2. To inform faculty of the existing range of publishing platforms available for them to disseminate their research in their respective disciplines
  3. To provide faculty practical guidance on manuscript preparation and submission and the peer review process
  4. To encourage faculty to engage in impactful research and submit their works for publishing

This seminar shall define and explain the fundamental concepts related to Generative AI and how AI is being used in the publishing community. Additionally, the seminar shall discuss how to formulate actionable plans around AI based on the knowledge and strategies shared.

By the end of the seminar, participants should be able to:

  • articulate their thoughts and ideas about how AI is leveraged in the publishing community with clarity and confidence.
  • demonstrate a clear understanding of Generative AI by being able to define and explain its core concepts;

This shall equip authors with effective strategies for evaluating journals to make informed decisions regarding journal selection and research publication. By exploring journal impact metrics and analyzing journal trends, this session aims to provide insights into determining the most suitable venues for the participants’ research publications.

At the end of the session, the participants are expected to:

  1. Understand how Web of Science can be used to efficiently find the most influential research papers within a discipline or across disciplines;
  2. Learn how to examine the citation network of a paper to identify gaps and emerging trends in a particular topic;
  3. Utilize other key metrics for journal evaluation beyond the impact factor;
  4. Determine predatory publishing practices and learn ways to avoid predatory journals;

This is specially catered to those who are new to writing cases or are interested in becoming an author of business cases.

At the end of the session, the participants are expected to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the research publishing process;
  • Determine the most salient steps in publishing a research article;
  • Assess where they would most likely encounter problems;
  • Understand the significance of business cases in the fields of human resource management, marketing, operations management, corporate responsibility, and entrepreneurship, among many others; and,
