How to Access Online Databases in Arts and Humanities: Taylor and Francis, JSTOR, and Project Muse

Mabuhay! This video will show you how to access online databases specializing in Arts and Humanities namely: Taylor and Francis, JSTOR, and Project Muse. 

This video is brought to you by your friendly Reference Librarians at the Information Services and Instruction Section, UP Diliman University Library.

Main Library Website and OpenAthens

When accessing these databases, you have two options: one is to visit the Main Library Website at mainlib.upd.edu.ph. Go to ‘search’ then click the ‘online subscriptions ‘This will lead you to our subscribed databases. Under Multidisciplinary are JSTOR and Taylor and Francis. While under Arts and Humanities is Project Muse.

Another option is through OpenAthens using your UP Mail. OpenAthens is a gateway for single sign-on to different online databases. Click ‘google apps’ scroll down and select ‘OpenAthens’. Make sure you are signed in with your UP Mail. Select “Sign in my OpenAthens” and click “Sign in”. Using the search box,  type in your preferred database.

Taylor and Francis Online

Using OpenAthens, search for Taylor and Francis. Taylor & Francis Online provides access to over 1 million journals articles and access to 20,000 e-books across Science, Technology, Medicine and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. 

Navigating through Taylor and Francis Online is simple. You can either do a basic or advanced search, depending on what you want to see. You can also explore journals and articles by subject.

Show how to use Taylor and Francis (basic search)

To access journals and articles, click the search box, type in the keyword, and click search.

Users may opt to use Advanced Search. This allows users to combine search terms. 

Users may enter keywords, authors, DOI or ORCID. 

At the mid-section of the page, you will see the search results related to your keyword/s.

On the left side, it shows the ‘filters’ to narrow your search options.

Using this feature can narrow down your search by:

  1. Access Type (full text or open access)
  2. Subject
  3. Publisher
  4. Publication Date

Click the title you want to access. 

Here, you will see details such as Abstract and References, and if available, Figures and Data. 

If the journal or article has full text, you can access it by clicking “PDF”.it will lead you to the full text , which you can download by clicking the “download icon” on the top right corner.

Do not forget to cite your sources. Citations are available per title. 

JSTOR

Another subscribed database is JSTOR. JSTOR offers a high-quality, interdisciplinary archive to support scholarship and teaching. It includes archives of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and business as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work. 

Like Taylor and Francis, navigating through is simple as well. You can also either do a basic or advanced search. You can explore JSTOR by subject, title, collections, or publisher.

Show how to use JSTOR (basic search)

To access academic journal articles, books, and primary sources, click the search box, type in the keyword, and click search.

Users may opt to use Advanced Search that allows you to combine search terms. 

JSTOR also has an Image Search. You can explore available images, or use the “filters” on the left side to narrow your image search options. 

At the mid-section of the page, you will see the search results related to your keyword/s.

  1. Academic Content (Journals, Book Chapters, Research Reports)
  2. Primary Source Content (Images, Serials, Documents, Books)
  3. Publication Date
  4. Subject
  5. Access Type

Click the title you want to access. You may Download, Save or Cite it. 

You may want to check the abstract and references first before downloading the full version of the article. . 

To read the article, select the title and click “Download PDF” and it will lead you to the full text, you can download it by clicking the “download icon” at the top right corner.

Do not forget to cite your sources. Citations are available per title.

Project Muse

The last database is Project Muse. Project MUSE provides online subscription access to 100% full text, peer-reviewed, current periodical content from not-for-profit publishers in the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences.

Its mission is to promote the creation and dissemination of essential humanities and social science resources through collaboration with libraries, publishers, and scholars worldwide. Forged from a partnership between a university press and a library, Project MUSE is a trusted part of the academic and scholarly community it serves.

Show how to use Project Muse (basic search)

To access journals and books, click the search box, type in the keyword, and click search.

Users may click the ‘browse’ button. This allows users to scan available journals or books. Users can also browse by publisher. 

Project Muse also offers new additions of books and journals that users can find in the mid-section of the home page.

Similar to the two online databases previously mentioned, Project Muse also has a ‘limiters’ feature to help users narrow down their search. 

Using this feature can narrow down your search by:

  1. Access Type
  2. Content Type
  3. Publisher
  4. Series
  5. Journal
  6. Author’s name
  7. Language
  8. Research Area
  9. Publication Year

Click the title you want to access. You may View, Download or Save the title you preferred. 

You can access and download the title by clicking “Download”.      The “download icon is at  the right top corner. 

Do not forget to cite your sources. You can view the citations per  title.
