#TodayInHistory: September 11, 1917 - Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.

Before martial law, Pres. Marcos (middle, black robe) attended the investiture of UP President Salvador Lopez as student protesters called for the freedom of political prisoners.

The University Archives, UP Diliman and Strategic Communication, Research and Marketing Section, in partnership with the President's Committee on Culture and the Arts (PCCA) and the UP Diliman OICA, invites you to 𝓢𝓟 𝓛𝓸𝓹𝓮𝔃: 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓡𝓪𝓭𝓲𝓬𝓪𝓵 𝓟𝓻𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓷𝓽, an exhibition of the Salvador P. Lopez Papers in commemoration of the 𝘜𝘗 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. The exhibit will be officially launched on 10 September 2024 (Tuesday) at 9:30 AM in the Environmental and Energy Engineering Building lobby.

This exhibit aims to bring to the public the life and accomplishments of the former UP President. One of the most famous images of SP Lopez was him rallying with students on the steps of AS Hall against the presence of military in the campus. He was a firm supporter of UP’s autonomy and academic freedom and for that he earned the respect and admiration of students during the difficult times of Martial Law.

DID YOU KNOW? 🧐

Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was straight-up unshakable.

While imprisoned in 1980, Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. suffered a heart attack and was moved to the Philippine Heart Center where he suffered a second heart attack.

A surgery was needed, but he refused to be treated due to threats to his life. He requested to either be treated in the US or to bring him back to his cell.

His request was granted ONLY on the condition that:
One, he will return,
and two, he will not speak out against the Marcos regime while in the US.

After a successful surgery in Dallas, and in the face of worsening conditions in the Philippines, he promptly broke the agreement and declared:
"A pact with the devil is no pact at all."

Ninoy actively delivered speeches against the Marcos regime at freedom rallies during his stay in the US.
